Hi
I am 45 years old and have had UC since I was 18. I had a liver transplant at age 36, but only on steroids since then. My doctors tell me that I am in a very high cancer risk, never had displasia. They say do it while I still feel healthy. Very scared. Dont know if I should before I get something else that would make surgery more risky, but I am not really having a problem that prednisone cant fix about every 6 months.
How have you been feeling?

Dear Stephanie,

I had a J-Pouch fitted in Nov 2004 and all as been as OK as it can be apart from having to go to the loo about 10 to 12 times aday, also the feeling you get when you want to go can be painfull. I have just been told I have Pouchitis which is becouse they leave about 50m/m of the colon the staple the small intestine too. Well my UC is still active in that small area and I have made up my mind to go back to the bag.
I live in Australia and do bird photogtaphy all over this wonderful land and a bag would be better to life with as its so easy to empty instead of looking for a loo.
Good luck to all of you and just live life as best you can its better than the alternative.
Regards Keith Hindley Melbourne Australia.

I'm going to see a surgeon for the first visit today. I've had UC for 30 years, and my doctor found high grade dysplasia last September (2009). He's done 2 colonoscopies since then, which were both negative, but he truly wants me to have the j pouch surgery, as my cancer risk is so high. I am 46 yrs old and I am terrified. Having lived with this disease all these years, I've never been scared and just went with the flow, so to speak... but this truly has me shaking in my boots. I would love to know how your story is going now, Stephanie, so if you get the chance to, please post again. Hope all is well !

Wow. I had my colon removed this past May, not because of UC but because of a genetic mutation that leads 100% of the time to colon cancer (FAP). The only way to avoid colon cancer is the complete removal of it. So there I was 24 years old having the surgery to remove the colon, create a J-pouch and have an iliostomy. I had plenty of complications because I had open heart surgery at the age of 22 and have a mechanical valve and am on blood thinners. I spent the majority of the summer in and out of the hospital, I think the total was 37 days. I had to have the take down surgery for the iliostomy at five weeks instead of three months because my small intestine was completely swollen and no food would pass. It's so nice to find other young people who can completely relate to my issues, Thanks Stephanie for sharing!

Hi Stephanie, I'm impressed that they did a C incision instead of a medial one. You will be blessed with minimal scarring. Best of Luck!!!
