I just had my first surgery on 6/15/11. It went well and I was discharged only after two days. Everything seemed okay...until two days later. My stoma stopped pooping and I had a terrible pain. I ended up in ER and got admitted. That night, I started puking lots of bile like every 30 minutes. I thought I was dying! I started to feel a little better after my nurse inserted a nasogastric tube to suck up all the stomach acids. Doctor told me that I probably had a partial blockage due to ileus (My intestines not moving). It was a terrifying experience and I still keep thinking about it and it gives me the chills. I was discharged after six days. My abdomen is still a bit sore when I move around but my stoma is working and I am trying to get used to my new routine (emptying my ileostomy bag and drinking Gatorade throughout the day, etc.). After going through what I went through, it makes me feel nervous to have my second surgery because it may happen again. "sigh" I'm trying not to get depressed but sometimes I just feel so down. :(

Diluting Gatorade is a good idea! I'm not a big fan of Gatorade but I know I will need to drink lots of it after having this surgery. I am still nervous about the surgery but at the same time I'm beginning to feel more positive about it because this will be the end of having cramps and diarrhea all the time. I will go to a restaurant and no need to locate the restroom first! It will feel so weird not having the urge to go to the bathroom.

I'm sure he knows what hes doing, just don't let them rush you out of the hospital before you're ready. This is a HUGE surgery, it will take time to recover. Period.

As for the hospital...I usually bring my laptop, ipod, those kinds of things. But pack extra underwear, your brush and what not. I always bring a pillow. Its mostly just comfort type stuff. Sweat pants and stuff for the ride home. I live 3 hours from the hospital too, so make sure to fill your pain meds before you leav so you can have them for the ride home. I would also get some gatorade because you will ALWAYS be dehydrated now. I water down my gatorade half and half, I found straight gatorade is too sugary, but half and half lets me drink a lot more. The hospital will have all the stuff you'll need in regards to your surgery and ostomy. Welcome to the ostomy world...its a pretty cool place once you learn you can get your life back!

Hmm...I hope my surgeon knows what he is doing...supposedly he has like 30 years of experience and supposed to be good. I will be having my surgery at USC(University of Southern California) in Los Angeles. It takes almost 3 hour drive from where I live. I started packing my bag yesterday. Do you suggest any special items that I should bring to the hospital?

After surgery #1 I stayed for like 4 days, then got checked out and then got checked back in cause I couldn't control my pain. They WILL give you tons of pain meds....really good ones! But 2-3 days sounds waaaay too short to me. At least in my experience.

Jackie,
I really appreciate your support. I think I am so nervous because I don't know what kind of pain I will be having after this kind of surgery and I hope my surgeon will give me some pain killer when I wake up from anesthesia. He told me I would only be staying in the hospital for 2 to 3 days. How long did you stay in the hospital after having the first surgery?

Susan,
I know that approaching surgery can be scary but there is a great community here. Also, I am now 9 days away from my takedown, and Ill be honest, I'm scared to give up my bag. In the beginning, the bag sounded like the worst thing ever, but now I'm so used to it, and it makes my life so easy, Im afraid to give it up. It will take some time, but you will eventually see how the ileo makes your life better. Feel free to contact me any time!

Jackie,
Thank you so much for your advice! You just made me feel a lot better. It is the best way to get an answer from someone who had experienced the surgery than to get it from a surgeon because they don't really know what WE go through.

Susan,
CHEW! I've had my ileo for over a year now, and I've never had a blockage. You need to be super conscious of what you eat (I am perhaps, overly conscious), but mostly its about not getting too excited when you're stuffing your face. There are even times now, where I'm empyting my bag and I see lots of almost whole food and it keeps reminding me to chew better. When you eat with a colon the way you chew doesn't really matter, but it has to become something you really think about. I also eat almost anything I want. Lettuce still scares me, but other than that, I eat nuts, I just chew them like crazy. I eat pop corn but only a few pieces per mouthful. Also if you get a blockage, its not the end of the world. You can try to work it out yourself at home, with hot tea and manually pushing your stomach, but if you have to go to the hospital...its no big deal. They pump you with pain meds...and send you home basically.

If you have any questions, email me Jackie [at] gmail [dot] com, or check out my other blog, bloodpooptears.wordpress.com I blogged from presurgery to now through all my other surgeries. Good luck. Keep up posted!
