Speaking of fashion…this was a nifty site selling all kinds of pouch related gear. Even a sport guard—in case you feel the urge to jump tackle. Their pouch covers weren’t too expensive, I thought.

crazy as this sounds I goggled illeostomy covers and there is a whole world out there of people wanting to make this little gadget a fashion piece. Here is just one of many.
I hope that it brings a smile to your face as your pictures above did mine. I do hope that you are feeling better too. When do you go home?

Dangit! There’s a business venture here that I need to tap into: Batman Pouch Covers! And KFC Pouch Covers for Elise! I’ll go take some arts and crafts classes at the ol’ community college and learn how to sew!
As for going home, I am home. It’s more going back in mid-July for takedown. Back with a vengeance!

No one has really mentioned this concern–so far as I’ve seen, but I’m new to the site–but when I first got my ileostomy, it drove me NUTS to see the contents of the pouch! Luckily, when the ostomy nurse came to give me the whole pouch run-through and supplies, she brought me opaque bags and an ostomy belt. The bags were awesome because they were a light tan color (about the same shade as the belt), and had kind of a fuzzy layer outside the plastic. I found that this slight difference made things a lot more doable for me; not to mention, even if you do not wear a belt, the opaque bags are easier to conceal in that they are more-or-less skin tone.

Totally! An Opaque velcro bag was the first thing I requested :)
I currently have the exact bag you describe (skin/tan with cloth instead of cold, harsh plastic).
Looking at your own poo is only exciting for the first few split-seconds. I don’t need a reminder of what I had for lunch everytime I look down : )

Velcro? I don’t think I’ve seen those, but they sound good. Yes, I’m a bit poo-phobic like that…there are even a couple of foods I refused to eat for the rest of the time I had my ostomy, just because I’d seen what they looked like in the pouch! Kind of odd, I know.

(I realize my comment above probably is a little off-topic, but I just wrote it as another option for “stylized” bags!)

Ooooh Brevin! Thank g-d for your humor! I really needed it. I wasin the nice opaque bags but needed a convex barrier and my nurse ordered clear bags. For the first time in 7 weeks I am soooooo sick of my bag, frustrated actually. I blame it on the clear bags. Nothing like seeing your own poo constantly to make a day feel shitty. Thanks for making me laugh! I taped cloth over my bag yesterday and it worked pretty good. Too bad you couldn’tinvent and Abracadabra bag…..now you seeit/nowyou don’t.

I wish these darn baggies werent so big, I can’t believe I already have a wish list. I want an opaque pouch with a velcro closure – 7 inches would be ideal, the only one like that I can find is 12 inches or you have to switch to the clamp. Anyone know of something?? And what is the deal with the belt?? I saw it in the picture, how does that work?? I got some pregnancy belly bands.

You don’t have a belt thingy? Demand one from the home nurse. Scream and hold your breath until you get one. The belt is a nice re-assurance of holding the bag in place (both mental and physical).
That’s a great question about bag sizes. I didn’t know there was an option. Is there?

Elise, FYI with those pregnancy belly bands, be careful you don’t let to bag get very full. I’ve used them a couple of times and so far they have made me leak twice. Just keep an eye on it. :)

How come there are no pregnant dude pants? Pregnant. Dude. Pants. Sexism!

Maybe you should make some. The bands actually aren’t pants. They are like a nylon thing for pregnant women when they can’t button their pants anymore and whatnot. They just happen to do a good job at hiding a ileo bag also.

I HATEthe size of the bags too. I was in a 9in.and still found that too big (I’m 5’1″). Now I’m in the godzilla of bags thanks to my nurse’s misorder. You guys really like the velcro????? I’ve been scared to try them cuz I’m scared to death of the velcro coming undone. I use that hard bulky clip and groan my way through changing positions…especially with jeans on. The belts ARE great….makes things more comfortable too. I also tape the top of my bag down so it doesnt’t balloon above my pants. Any other suggestions????? I WANT something that smoothes everything…..

Trish! Trust me, go velcro. Sure it’s velcro, but the part that closes up is a hard plastic that is super easy to clean and folds up nicely. Want proof? I’m zero leaks so far. Zero!

That’s impressive! My ostomy nurse was in this morning and I made her order 7 in opaque velcro bags. 1 week of clear JUMBO bags is enough for me…..so,hey,might as well try them. Sending you a huge virtual hug if they work as well as you claim…..

    Elise,
As soon as I ordered my first bags, I order the hollister “new image lock n roll drainable pouches with integrated filter”. Its a two piece pouch system. Its not beige on both sides so I no longer have to see my poo as I did while in the hospital. It also has a carbon filter to filter out gas and odor so you dont get gas bulges in the pouch. I love it and feel more comfortable with it knowing i wont gross anyone out if I lift up my shirt, most of all me. If your ordering the item # is 18183.

so should you request these velcro bags when booking your surgery? I am hoping to meet with a stoma nurse prior to surgery. How many bags do you need per day, per week? I agree with the comment above, seeing your poo all week is a great way to have a shitty week. Oh, the anxiety I am having already and I havent even chosen a surgeon.

You should see your stoma nurse before your surgery. They are the one’s who mark the site for your stoma. My hospital was contracted with a specific company so the ostomy supplies I started out with are different than the ones I have now. I’ve had a velcro bag since day 1. If they show you supplies that aren’t velcro then definitely request them. I was told to change the appliance every 2-3 days. The supplies that I use are at the following websites: this one
and to give you more of a visual. I’d try to get a wafer that you don’t need to use scissors on. Scissors are a pain.

Thanks for the tip. I will print those off for when the time comes. Do most insurance companies cover the cost of these items?
